We would like to invite you to participate in the first Set Type & Print (ST&P) Letterfest that will take place from 23 to 27 September 2024.
The city of Hilversum has a rich design and printing history that provides ample inspiration. For this inaugural edition we will be able to study a full set of the famous Kwadraatbladen that were published by Steendrukkerij De Jong and some of the now famous exhibition posters that were designed by their art director Pieter Brattinga on a 3 × 5 squares grid.
The project: use the extensive type collection at GAH to create new posters based on this 3 × 5 squares grid.
About Grafisch Atelier Hilversum
Grafisch Atelier Hilversum (GAH) is one of the oldest and best equipped open print studios in the Netherlands. Large and luminous studio spaces are available for screen printing, lithography, intaglio, letterpress, photography and more. GAH runs printing courses and events throughout the year, using and showcasing both traditional and modern techniques.
About the type collection
Over the last few months the type collection has been reorganised and sorted. It consists over 400 cases of metal type and numerous cases and drawers of wood type. Three major wood type collections have been added to GAH’s own historical collection in the last few years:
those of Ben Joosten, Herma Steur and René Treumann.
The programme
Monday 23 September: doors open from 14:00,discover the studio and the material, 17:00 meet and greet & drinks.
Tuesday 24 September: first day of printing, doors open from 9:00 for coffee and tea, kick-off at 10:00, closing time 17:00.
Wednesday 25 September: doors open from 9:00 for coffee and tea, kick-off at 10:00, closing time 17:00.
Thursday 26 September: last day of printing! Doors open from 9:00 for coffee and tea, shared dinner in the studio, possibility to continue to work until 22:00.
Friday 27 September: doors open at 9:00 as you probably know by now. Cleaning, distributing, tidying up and gathering the prints and discussion. Around 15:00 we will take the train to Amsterdam, where the Stichting Mooi Marginaal will present their selection of the finest private press books. This event takes place in the OBA (main public library), situated next to the central station.

Where: Grafisch Atelier Hilversum, Noorderweg 96B, 1221AB Hilversum. a 20-minute train ride from the Central Station of Amsterdam. From the station, a 10-minutes walk will take you to GAH.
